How to send your old film to us for processing
If you have a roll or cassette of
old film, and are planning to use our service, we certainly want things to go
smoothly.
When offering so many services (we can handle almost any film ever made)
it is difficult to make an order form detailed enough to cover everything, yet
simple enough to follow for everyone.
Here are a few guidelines on how to best proceed, please read everything
below carefully to help our system work efficiently and minimise delays.
About our services
·
We
handle any old film, and we have experience with almost all film types in
history. However for some newer
types of film (like new or 'in-date' Cine film) we recommend other labs. We are starting to offer more and more
services for new films, like Black/White, Infra-red film and occasionally
Cross-processing. Demand is also
increasing for 110 film printing.
Prices aren’t set in stone yet, so if you have a new film that
your local Photo Shop can’t help with, ask us instead.
·
Get
in touch. If you want more
information about your own film or have any questions, please email us at info@processc22.co.uk, call us directly
on (0845) 2244 496, or write to us with a letter. It can be difficult to get through on
the telephone as we are often very busy, but we enjoy receiving enquiries and
will be pleased to talk about your film and the likelihood of success.
·
We've recently moved office - Our
new postal address is: PO BOX 496, MARGATE, CT9 9EE, UK.
If you still have our old details, please replace them as soon as possible to avoid confusion.
·
Our
Information Sheet
gives lots more details about our services and prices, and a list of common
film types we handle.
How to calculate and send payment
·
The
best way to calculate the payment required is to work in ‘segments’
depending on what you would like us to do.
A typical full
comprehensive service for an old roll or cassette of Kodacolor-X, TriFCA or Verichrome film might be:
Film
Processing £15
Digitally restored prints £15
(recommended, this is refundable if film is blank)
CD-Rom of images £3
(optional, can only be ordered if prints are ordered, also refundable if film is blank)
(or new 'Archival Gold' CD) (only £10 for a 300-year Archival CD, see 'News' on our homepage for more details)
Postage and packing £1
(for the whole order, unless you are sending 3+ films)
Upgrade to Special Delivery £5
(optional insured delivery, for the whole order. Now up to £5 due to the new postal prices)
TOTAL £39
Disc
film, and recent 126 or 110 cassettes (C-41 and less than around 12 years old) are much simpler:
Film
Development £16
Set of Prints included
in price
CD-Rom of images £3
(an optional extra, and easy access to your photographs. This is refundable if film is blank)
(or new 'Archival Gold' CD) (only £10 for a 300-year Archival CD, see 'News' on our homepage for more details)
Postage and packing £1
(upgrades to Special Delivery or Recorded Delivery are also available)
TOTAL £20 (or £17 for a basic 'D+P' service without an Image-CD)
For
Reprints from negatives, slides or prints, we calculate the price depending on how many images
there are.
Count up the total,
think about what size print you would like (or just a CD), and email us for a personal quote.
·
If
you have calculated the correct payment and are sending it with the film, Cheques and Postal Orders must be made
payable to “D. Roberts”. Nothing else is acceptable, we will have
to return the payment to you.
Please don’t forget!
Sending a film from outside the UK
·
We process film from all over the world and are always delighted to receive orders from abroad. Equivalent prices ·
We prefer payment in GBP Sterling, this can easily be done using PayPal or an IBAN transfer which both minimise bank charges. If necessary we can usually accept Cheques (Checks) in your local currency, but a fixed surcharge is applied to cover the bank charges - please contact us for more information before sending anything to us.
Packaging and posting a
film to us ·
Please
include your name and address with your film. This may seem obvious, but we receive
quite a few orders with only a film in an envelope, and so far we’ve been
lucky in being able to track down every order. A covering letter is perfect or even
just a short note. Contact details
such as an email address and telephone number (a landline number if possible) are a great help. ·
There
is no need to include any return packing material, such as prepaid postage
bags, envelopes, or address labels.
We have our own methods of packaging to keep your photographs safe in
transit. ·
Use
a padded envelope such as a small Jiffy Bag. Ordinary paper envelopes are definitely
not suitable. We've sadly had rolls of film arrive crushed and ruined when sent like this, and it can't really be blamed on the postmen. ·
Write
your return address on the back of the package - a good security measure. ·
Please
try not to use staples in packaging.
They can and do damage film or negatives, paperwork, and also our hands! ·
Please
try not to put stickers or address labels on the film roll or canister itself,
this can obscure written information about the type and age of the film, which
is important to us in determining the best processing procedure. A good alternative is to use a 35mm
“film pot” or wrap the roll in aluminium foil, and then place an
address label on the outside of that. ·
The
Post Office now charges by size as well as weight, and many rolls of film are
thicker than the regulation 2.5cm.
If sending a roll of film, we recommend a visit to the Post Office to
check you have paid the correct postage.
The Royal Mail charges us the underpaid postage plus £1 fee each time, so
mistakes can be costly. Service Times ·
Remember
that at the moment service times can be long for obscure and very old
films. We aren’t a
‘one-hour’ photolab, we take our time if necessary and handle
every order with a very high level of individual attention. By all means contact us to find out how
things are going, but please don’t jump to conclusions and send us
aggressive emails or letters - there is nothing more dispiriting, and after all, we’re trying
to do our best for you. ·
We
had big problems in 2005 and 2006 with a number of our trusted suppliers
closing down. Some of the methods
and components we rely on haven’t been used in Photography since the time
of WWII, and as the industry races ill-advisedly towards Digital Photography,
we have had to spent much time just sourcing what we need to operate. This has caused some horrendous delays
and some rarer film types have been subject to a very long wait. We’re in a much better position
now and caught up a lot in 2007. We’re a bit behind schedule again since relocating offices so the message is still: “Bear with
us!” What you will receive back ·
We
return all orders in board-backed envelopes, or sandwiched between stiffeners
inside a padded envelope. Disc or
126 films and reprints are returned in 9”x7” packages, easily fit
into a letterbox. Processed old
film is sleeved in proper heavy-duty archival sleeving (good extra protection
for films that we like to add as part of the service), this is folded along a
seam and returned in 10”x8” board-backed envelopes. Bear in mind these sometimes may not fit
through a letterbox. Prints are
returned in a standard wallet, and CD-Roms in a small sleeve with a soft fabric inner. We recommend you make a new copy of standard
CDs every 3-5 years in order to safeguard the digital images from disc deterioration. ·
An
important added benefit of ordering the full Digital Printing service is that
we archive all digital scan files for a time. This means if anything is lost in the
post, we can reprint the images for you.
This also means you can order reprints from your favourite recovered
images, just by making a telephone call or sending an email to us. Click here to return to our home page. © The text and style of this page is copyright 2007 to
