UK Agfa Scala Service

We offer an independent UK processing service for Agfa Scala film, and also for Europe, Australia and Japan.
There has been no official processing for Scala film in the UK since Agfa closed in 2005, and ceased supply of components in early 2006.

Agfa Scala is a professional film which gives rich Black and White slides (transparencies), acclaimed for wide tonal range and a luxurious feel.
The film achieves these elusive effects by a unique reversal process different to anything seen before.

Scala film itself can surprisingly still be found, and we've seen film dated as far ahead as December 2010, although this is still probably
repackaged final stock from 2005. The film is definitely no longer being manufactured as we have confirmation from Germany that the
developers have all been discontinued. The best way to find Agfa Scala in the UK is to search on eBay for it.

About Our Processing Service...

UK Service - Process Only - £15.00 per film
(including First Class P&P)

Overseas Service - Process Only - €18 per film (AU$35, ¥2500)
(including Airmail Shipping)

This price includes processing (but not scans or prints), sleeving and postage of one Agfa Scala film, in 35mm or 120 format.

(We do not yet handle Fomapan R, or Agfa Scala in 5"x4" sheet film format.)

We do develop the older type, Agfa Dia-Direct, but due to its age, this is available only on our 'Old film processing' service.

Currently poor Exchange Rates make sending Agfa Scala from the United States or Canada a prohibitively expensive option.
Please contact us for more information if you are based in these countries, we will be pleased to help you find a laboratory local to you.

More Information

  • Turnaround time - Currently occasional batches, but our Scala service is rather oversubscribed and we are finding it
challenging to keep up with demand. We hope soon to be able to run a batch every month. We process each film
individually by hand so a fast turnaround (like at Joe's Basement or Primary Colour in the past) is almost impossible.
This is a fairly new service we've started only because with the demise of Agfa it has become unavailable elsewhere in the UK.
It is only part of what we offer - our main line of work

Please don't expect a turnaround of a few days, or for us to process your film quicker than our other Customer's films.
We try our hardest to be fair and most importantly we will not be hurried and risk compromising results.
By all means check with us how an order is progressing or call for a friendly chat about film photography, but we just can't
respond to repeated or persistent enquiries - recently one or two have been spoiling this service for everyone by being rude or
sending aggressive emails - this will not be tolerated and such orders may be immediately cancelled.
Naturally we would always treat any genuine grievance with concern and full personal attention.
We're just doing our best to help photographers in the UK continue using the unique Scala film!

  • Push Recommendations - We no longer offer a change of speed. As Scala gets more outdated, maximum density
is reduced more than we think looks acceptable. Uprated film can still be processed, but as negatives only.
Do bear in mind that all outdated film loses maximum density. A high percentage of the Scala we process is expiry-dated 2005
or earlier, and push-processing doesn't give anywhere near as good results as it would have when the film was fresh.

  • Scanning and Printing options - We can indeed scan and print Scala films - email us for all the options.
Prints are 4", 5" or 6" machine prints from our own scans, we don't hand-print or produce Cibachromes.
Scans can be thumbnails or very high resolution - let us know your requirements for a personal service.
We can easily scan from the Hasselblad X-Pan format and 120 films.

  • Slide Mounting options - Mounting is done by hand (Gepe Glassless or Reflecta CS), and the mounted slides sleeved rather than boxed -
this looks impressive - a nice presentational touch. Hand-Mounting is £10 per film.

  • Scala Mailers - What to do with them - We can't accept Scala Mailers as we are an independent company with no connection to Agfa,
and cannot recoup the value of these envelopes.

  • Other films for Black/White reversal process - Due to lack of time for proper testing, and little interest so far, we
are not offering slides from Fomapan R or other films (such as FP4+, PanF, Rollei, Tmax, Infra-red).
This might change in the future if we get less busy with old film or start to rationalise services.

THE ADDRESS FOR POSTING YOUR SCALA FILM IS :

SCALA SERVICE, PO BOX 496, MARGATE, CT9 9EE, ENGLAND
For our UK Customers, please beware of the new Royal Mail postal pricing structure. Most film rolls are over the regulation 2.5cm, and therefore we
recommend that you check the weight and thickness of the package at a Post Office before sending, to avoid underpayment of postage.

For any enquiries about our Agfa Scala service, please email us at info@agfascala.co.uk,
telephone in the UK on
(0845) 2244 496
or Write to us with a letter to the address above.
